OSU Nursing utilizes active virtual/on-demand learning modalities to educate nursing students

Organization: The Ohio State University College of Nursing
HESS Components Used: Sphygmomanometer, Body Sounds
Other Platforms Utilized: Zoom, YouTube

The Story:

The OSU challenge involved how to conduct classes using active, engaging virtual and on-demand approaches for around 80 students enrolled in the Graduate Health Assessment course (N6410) in a way that did not exceed faculty technical capabilities, that provided a custom fit for the course instructional content - and that could be implemented in a cost effective way.

The instructional team, led by Sinead Yarberry MS, RN, APRN-CNP, APRN-CNS - an Instructor of Clinical Practice within The Ohio State University Graduate Nursing Program, collaborated with the College of Nursing's Technology Learning Complex to use the HESS to easily generate video and audio "snippets" of vital signs and body sounds that visually and audibly supported the specific instructional objectives of the course - and that could be presented online virtually within Zoom sessions and on YouTube using the faculty's existing laptops (PC or Mac).

Here are samples of the video and audio "snippets" (have a look and a listen):

Sample HESS Sphygmomanometer Readings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1QU8w0h-8Q
Sample HESS S3 Gallop at 70 BPM: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GfjLHHwTOmY

Sinead reported that "using the recorded video worked great!" and that "all the faculty were able to access it without any trouble from the YouTube link." She also noted that the student reaction was very favorable and that students "were thankful we had ways to teach them BP readings in a virtual setting".

Future plans for utilizing the HESS involve the inclusion of HESS video and audio "snippets" in online quizzes - as well as building a library of HESS generated video and audio "snippets" that can be assembled in a wide variety of ways to meet educational objectives involving active and engaging virtual and on-demand learning modalities - thus further leveraging the investment made in the HESS (because the HESS is pretty great for in-person nursing education exercises too!).
