OhioHealth uses Standardized Patients for In Situ OSCE Assessment Exercises

Organization: OhioHealth
HESS Components Used: Body Sounds App, Magic Invisible Markers
Other Platforms Utilized: Standardized Patients

The Story:

OhioHealth's Dr. Sarah Sams knows the value of Standardized Patients for Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) exercises with learners. The realism of the exercise happening in an actual exam room along with the real human interaction and communication are invaluable - as long as the patient vitals on a human actor can "play along". And that's one area where the HESS is at its very best.

The requirement of the exercise was to have the learner hear a heart murmur along with clear respiration sounds in the superior lobes and crackles in the inferior lobes during auscultation. The exercise would then proceed with patient questioning, communication and probable advisement for further examination by a specialist.

The HESS Body Sounds App and Magic Invisible Markers were a perfect fit when using the Standardized Patients "in situ" in an actual exam room. Plus, the affordability of the HESS allowed four exam rooms to be run simultaneously to enable over a dozen learners to individually participate in the exercise within just a few hours.

Dr. Sams used the term "game changing" to describe this HESS capability - especially with regard to the Magic Invisible Markers - and all of her learners successfully completed the exercise.

Below is a picture of Dr. Sams verifying the sounds and setup with one of the Standardized Patients before the training exercises began.
