OSU Nursing sets up an "auscultation station" with the HESS

Organization: The Ohio State University College of Nursing
HESS Components Used: Body Sounds App, Magic Invisible Markers (sort of)
Other Platforms Utilized: Printer Paper

The Story:

Stephanie Justice has done it again.... as a creative driving force with regard to HESS usage. Stephanie surprised the HESS Engineering Team regarding their own technology - by determining that the Magic Invisible Marker sensor does not always even need the magic invisible markers. It turns out that different colors of printer paper can work as a suitable surface too!

Stephanie is truly a specially talented nursing educator with a knack for creating and sharing great educational approaches that are engaging for the learners - in this case by using their own ears and minds - and that initiate the need for critical thinking and discussions involving clinical judgement. Her efforts prove once again that Active Learning and Simulation are both about so much more than just manikins.

The "auscultation station" setup enables more than just hearing and identifying various heart, lung or bowel sounds - but also presenting and diagnosing complex combinations simulating patient cases that could indicate critical conditions such as congestive heart failure, pneumonia and much more.

Below is a picture of the simple, easy and very useful multi station setup..... yeah... just a couple of tablets, an IV pole and some tables and chairs. Stephanie used the HESS Stethoscopes in her exercises - but the learners could have used their own earbuds just as easily.... The HESS Instructor tablet controlled which sound combinations were being heard for each "patient" situation being examined.
