The Story:

Donna Morgan MSN, RN is a Nursing Skills Lab Coordinator at Kent State Tuscarawas as well as a former Maternal/Child Nursing Manager in practice. She has years of expertise and "love" for OB and OB education.

To complement the traditional didactic focus of course instructor Laurie Barcus MSN, RN within the nursing program's NRST 20209 Maternal/Newborn Developmental Self Care course, Donna steps in with the affordable/portable HESS to facilitate advanced, valuable and effective OB active learning to benefit the Kent State Tuscarawas nursing students.

Objectives of the course include instructing students on how to plan and deliver nursing care to individuals and families in the maternal newborns setting using the nursing process. The HESS helps the Kent State Tuscarawas team meet the outcome - to utilize clinical judgment using evidence-based practice to integrate increasingly complex knowledge, skills and technologies as they relate to the client.

The HESS Fetal Monitor - with it's easy setup and usage - is perfect for the job. Donna loves that you can quickly and easily create decels, accels, contractions, and have the maternal heart rate and pulse ox print on the "strip". She notes that "it just makes it as real as possible" for the learners.

The Fetal Monitor is just one portion of the HESS that Kent State Tuscarawas utilizes. Other active learning exercises make use of the HESS Body Sounds (auscultation), the HESS Glucometer and the HESS Thermometer - often in conjunction with the program's Laerdal manikin to augment and enhance it's functionality.

Thanks Donna! And thanks to the well prepared Kent State Tuscarawas nursing students too!
